VMware Restore of Entire Virtual Machine

 

General information

VMware Restore is used to restore entire virtual machines. The restore of virtual machines can be performed from any chosen pool.
 

Opening dialog

1. Go to Backup/Restore > Restore.
⇨ The Restore Wizards window is opened.
2. Click VMware.
⇨ The wizard searches the system for virtual machines. The VMware Restore window is opened, showing the existing proxies.
 

Selecting VMware for restore

1. In the Proxies/VM Hosts/VMs panel, select the proxy, the VM host and the virtual machine you wish to restore.
2. In the Restore Point Selection section, select the backups you wish to restore.
 
notice
If you select a differential backup, the last related Full Backup is selected automatically and also restored.
NOTICE
3. Click [Restore].

1. Select the desired options.
2. Click [Restore] to start the restore.

Restore Options: Target options

Restore using original VM name
The virtual machine is restored with its original VM name.
Restore using alternative VM name
The virtual machine is restored under an alternative VM name.
Text field for the alternative name.
Restore to original VM host
The virtual machine is restored to the original VM host.
Restore to alternative VM host
The virtual machine is restored to an alternative VM host.
Combo box listing existing VM hosts.
Restore to original datastore
The virtual machine is restored to the original datastore of the ESX server.
Restore to the following datastore
The virtual machine is restored to an alternative datastore of the ESX server.
Retain original Virtual Distributed Switch (VDS) and port assignments 
The original VDS and port assignments of the virtual machine are retained.
Remove VDS port assignment only
The port assignments are not restored. VMware dynamically regenerates new assignments. This option is only available, if the original assignments would result in errors.

Result

The restore is carried out. You can monitor its progress in Monitoring & Restoring > Monitoring. The data selected for restore is written to the target node. The result of the restore is subsequently displayed in the Report Manager.
 

 

VMware Restore of Individual Files

 

General information

VMware Restore can be used to restore individual files from a virtual machine. To do this, the files must be backed up in a GIR (Granular Item Recovery) disk pool.
To restore individual files from a virtual machine, the backup copy must be located in a GIR disk pool.

Selecting VMware for restore

1. On the Proxies/VM Hosts/VMs panel, select the proxy, the VM host and the virtual machine you wish to restore.

3. Select the storage location of the restore file by clicking [Granular Item Restore].

4. If the restore is to be copied to a physical machine, select the node.

or
5. If the restore is to be copied to a virtual machine, select Virtual Machine.
6. Confirm by clicking [OK].
⇨ The Granular Item Restore selection window is opened:

This section shows the backups of the selected machine.
Zahl_2
This section shows the physical or virtual machine on which the storage locations can be selected.

This section shows the files to be restored and the selected storage locations.
1. In section 1, select the backup file or folder.
2. In section 2, select the storage location.
3. Drag the file/folder to be restored from section 1 to section 2.
The selected file(s)/folder(s) and the selected storage location are shown in section 3.

1. Start the restore by clicking [Start Restore].
To monitor the restore process, click [Show Monitoring] to call up the monitoring window. This window can also be called up by selecting Monitoring & Restoring > Monitoring .
 

Result

The restore is carried out. The data selected for restore is written to the target node. The result of the restore is subsequently displayed in the Report Manager.
 

Mounting restore

 

General information

You have the option to mount the backup of the virtual machine on the VMware Proxy. In this process, a drive and a script (for dismounting) are generated.

1. On the Proxies/VM Hosts/VMs panel, select the proxy, the VM host and the virtual machine with the backup for the restore.
2. In the Restore Point Selection section, select the backups you wish to restore.
 

Mounting backup

1. Click [Mount Volumes].
⇨ A new drive with a not yet assigned drive letter is created on the computer and the selected backup is copied to this drive. The new drive and the name of the PC are displayed for information purposes:

Dismounting drive

In order to dismount the drive, a dismount script is generated on the desktop during the mounting process.
1. Double-click this script to run it.
⇨ The drive is dismounted.
